The Lego Master

The Lego Master, Oil on Linen, 61 x 61cm

There are people who move through the world quietly, leaving wonder in their wake. Bob my father in law is one of them.

At ninety years old, Bob has mastered an art form that most would never think to take seriously, and that is precisely what makes him extraordinary. I call him the Lego Master, and the title is no flattery. Bob constructs monumental replicas of cars, spacecraft, and architectural marvels entirely from those iconic little bricks, each one placed with the kind of patience and precision that humbles you. The cars alone are breathtaking: functioning engines, doors that open and close, signage rendered with painstaking accuracy. These are not toys. These are sculptures.

Spending time with Bob, I began to see the deep resonance between his world and mine. As a portrait painter, I am endlessly drawn to the nuances of a person, their spirit, their interior life, what quietly drives them. Bob builds with the same devotion. To work at that scale, with that level of detail, demands not just skill but a particular kind of seeing.

In this oil portrait, I set out to capture what I love most about Bob, his gentle, unhurried intelligence, and that rare, luminous curiosity that age has only deepened rather than dimmed. When Bob first saw his portrait for the first time, he was moved in a way I won’t forget. He told me it was a surreal feeling, to look at a painting and find yourself looking back. I think that is the highest compliment a portrait can receive.   Bob turned ninety last month. This painting is my tribute to him, and to the quiet joy he brings to everyone lucky enough to know him.
